Passing your theory test is the first big milestone on your journey to becoming a safe and confident driver. But let’s face it—it can feel overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect or how best to prepare. That’s where we come in! Here's everything you need to know to boost your confidence and pass first time and take a read through our FAQs at the bottom of the page.

What Is the Theory Test?

The UK theory test is made up of two parts:

  1. Multiple-Choice Questions – 50 questions, with 43 correct needed to pass.
  2. Hazard Perception – Watch 14 video clips and spot developing hazards.

You need to pass both parts at the same time to get your theory certificate.

How to Prepare For Your Theory Test

  • Study the Highway Code – Know your signs, rules, and safety tips.
  • Practise with Mock Tests – Recreate real test conditions and track your progress.
  • Watch Hazard Clips – Get used to spotting potential dangers early.

Mock Tests = Game Changer

Mock tests are the secret weapon of confident learners. They help you:

  • Reduce nerves

Theory Test FAQs

1. What actually is the theory test?

It’s the first big step towards getting your licence. The theory test checks your understanding of the rules of the road (like signs, laws, and safe driving habits) and your ability to spot hazards using video clips.

2. How do I book it?

Head straight to the official GOV.UK website to book your test. It’s quick and easy—but watch out for unofficial sites that charge extra.

3. How much does it cost?

Just £23 for the full test, which includes both the multiple-choice and hazard perception parts. (Correct April 2025)

4. What’s included in the test?

You’ll take two parts on the same day:

  • 50 multiple choice questions – you’ll need 43 or more to pass
  • Hazard perception video clips – you'll need to score 44 out of 75

You’ll need to pass both sections to get your certificate.

5. How do I prepare for it?

Use a mix of revision tools like the Highway Code, practice questions, and hazard perception clips. We’ve included mock theory tests and hazard practice in our memberships and test prep packs, so you're not on your own!

6. Can I practise with mock tests?

Absolutely—and you should! Inside our learning portal, you’ll find mock theory tests to help you prepare properly. You can purchase 90-days access to the Official DVSA Theory Test & Hazard Perception Kit here.

7. How long is it valid once I pass?

Your theory pass certificate is valid for 2 years. You’ll need to pass your practical test within that time or you’ll have to take the theory again.

8. Can I change or cancel my test if I need to?

Yes—but you now need to give at least 3 full working days’ notice. You can reschedule or cancel it on the GOV.UK site.

9. What if I need extra support?

There’s support available if you have special learning needs or require adjustments—like voiceovers or extra time. Let the DVSA know when you book so they can make arrangements.

10. How do I know if I’m ready?

If you’re consistently doing well in your mock tests and feel confident with your road knowledge and spotting hazards, it’s a good sign you’re ready to book!
